historic sites in ireland

To gain an understanding of Irelands history is essential in order to make sense of the story’s you may hear and see on the television. Ireland itself was first inhabited in the Ice Age, and there are remains and burial sites totally nearly 1200 throughout the country.

The most dramatic and well known remains in Ireland are The Great Passage Graves at Knowth and Newgrange. You will see elaborate spiral engravings cut into the stone. Little is known of the people who inhabited the island at this time, and remains have been found indicating that the life span was no more than 33 years.

The Celts arrived around 700BC, and this is where the main culture and language of Ireland was formed. It was not an invasion, more a gradual influx into the country. The Celts told many stories about fantastic warriors and the 2 greatest heroes are Cuchulainn and Fionn Mac Cumhaill.

Christianity arrived in Ireland as early as 4AD. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, Ireland assumed a position at the very forefront of Christianity. One of the most famous books in the world written in Latin is the Book of Kells; this can be seen in the Library of Trinity College, Dublin.
